Protective coatings for lower-cost solid oxide cells

Developing multilayer coatings that could allow widely available ferritic steels to replace specialist interconnect alloys.

The challenge

Metallic interconnects are an important cost component in solid oxide cell stacks. Lower-cost ferritic steels are attractive alternatives to dedicated alloys, but they need protection against oxidation and chromium release.

The approach

AltCoat develops multilayer coatings that address silica migration, chromia scale growth, and outward chromium transport. The work combines spinel-based layers, reactive elements, low-temperature processing, and perovskite nanofibres.

From material to stack

The research moves from coating development and long-term oxidation tests to integration in reversible solid oxide cell stacks. A central goal is to compare coated generic steels with Crofer 22 APU over 1,000 hours of operation. This is a project target, rather than a reported result.

Project partnership

The Institute of Power Engineering coordinates the project, with Yevgeniy Naumovich as principal investigator. Piotr Jasiński is the principal investigator at Gdańsk University of Technology. The total project budget is 2,283,352 PLN.
